Bluewater Gets Crabby in June Again

Sustainable Seafood restaurants in California and Phoenix bring back soft-shell crab tastings and menu celebrations. June 10 events feature soft-shell crab prepared two ways: tempura-style and sautéed with crab lemon caper beurre blanc.

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.  (May 20, 2019) – Every year about this time, Bluewater gets a little crabby.  But don’t worry – it’s a good thing.

Bluewater Grill restaurants in California and Phoenix are giving seafood and shellfish lovers the chance to indulge in soft-shell crab during the restaurants’ annual tastings and month-long celebrations dedicated to the delicacy. 

The Bluewater “Get Crabby” Tasting on June 10 features soft-shell crab prepared two ways – sautéed with crab lemon caper beurre blanc with fingerling potato salad and vinegar aioli and tempura-style and served with Asian vegetable salad and cilantro vinaigrette – paired with a Kungfu Girl Riesling from Washington and an Acrobat Pinot Gris from Oregon.

This cost of the celebration is $40 per person, and reservations are required. The softshell crabs will be available on a limited basis throughout the month but call ahead and make sure they are available because they sell out fast.

Soft-shell crab is a culinary term for crabs which have recently molted their old exoskeleton and are still soft, making them entirely edible. The most popular variety in the U.S., the Blue Crab, is typically served May through September deep-fried or sautéed.

The June 10 celebration at Bluewater Grills in Newport Beach, Redondo Beach, Temecula, Carlsbad and Santa Barbara, Calif., and Phoenix; at Bluewater Avalon on Catalina Island; and at Bluewater Boathouse Seafood Grill on Coronado Island is part of the restaurants’ popular Tuesday Night Tasting Series.      

The monthly series combines seasonal seafood and shellfish with wine, beer or sake and roving commentary by the restaurants’ resident seafood experts. In addition to the once-a-month celebratory events, customers can order the special feast off the menu throughout the month – and the result has become popular monthly gatherings in each Bluewater neighborhood.  

Consistent with Bluewater Grill’s strict commitment to seafood sustainability, the Blue Crab served during the tasting complies with sustainability standards established by the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach or other third-party organizations dedicated to fish-origin certification.
